Our mission is to advance the delivery of effective health care for pediatric sports medicine.

About

Pediatric/Adolescent Sports Medicine Interest Group

WHY

Pediatric and adolescent aged athletes make up a substantial portion of all sports medicine practices and also account for a significant number of musculoskeletal problems requiring diagnosis and treatment by generalists and orthopedic specialists in the medical community.  This is an age group that has unique risks and unique injuries when contrasted with an older population.  Despite well-established special needs of this group, there is no existing organization of medical professionals locally or nationally whose focus it is to address these needs.

Practitioners who care for these individuals in office practices, rehabilitation clinics, surgery centers, and/or as “team” or “event” medical providers recognize the need and potential benefit to patients for further collaboration.  A pediatric/adolescent sports medicine interest group can provide a forum for collaboration, education, research, policy formation, and networking among medical professionals caring for this population.

WHO

Invited participants to the pediatric/adolescent sports medicine interest group include sports medicine specialists, pediatricians, orthopedic surgeons,  and physical therapists.  Invited guests include physicians who are currently enrolled in a sports medicine fellowship program. Guest speakers or consultants may be brought in for specific meetings.

WHEN

A pediatric/adolescent sports medicine interest group calls for quarterly meetings on a weekday evening at a central location.  The format will include 30-45 minutes for dinner/social followed by 30 minutes to discuss interesting cases followed by a 30 minutes presentation on a topic of interest and relevance to the group.  Ample time will be allowed for questions and group interaction.  Further details about scheduling cases for presentation as well as the format for discussion will follow.

HOW

Sponsors have agreed to help defray costs related to reserving the meeting room, audiovisual support, and hospitality—including dinner and refreshments for the meetings.  Notification and reminders about meetings will generally take place via e-mail although the budget does include costs for occasional mailings, brochures, and clerical assistance.  Because of space limitations and planning for food and refreshments, all attendees will be required to RSVP before each meeting.

WHEN

The meetings will be held quarterly the months of September, December, March and June on the first Monday of the month.  The meetings will take place in Glaser Auditorium, located on the main floor of Swedish First Hill at 747 Broadway in Seattle.  Parking is available in the garage below the building (entrance off Broadway) and on the street. The dinner/social part of the program will start at 5:30 p.m. with the case discussions starting at approximately 6:15 p.m. and the featured presentation starting at approximately 7:00 p.m.
