SUMMARY:Effective and Responsible Sports Medicine Practices; The Athletes Perspective
DESCRIPTION:This session will explore effective medical care for elite athletes from the athletes perspective. What factors do the athletes find helpful in their medical treatment. What is important from the athlete’s perspective on return to sport. What is helpful\, and what is not\, during the rehabilitation process. \nSteven J. Anderson MD- specializes in non-operative sports medicine. In addition to caring for active individuals of all ages\, Dr. Anderson has provided medical care for the United States Diving Team\, Pacific Northwest Ballet\, NCAA and Pac 12 sports\, numerous local high schools and club teams. He is also actively involved in teaching sports medicine and primary care orthopedics to medical students\, residents\, specialty fellows and practicing physicians both locally and nationally. Dr. Anderson was the editor of both editions (2000\, 2010) of Care of the Young Athlete\, a textbook on sports medicine published jointly by the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. \nDr. Anderson has served as Chair of the Committee on Sports Medicine and Fitness for the American Academy of Pediatrics\, a member of the Examination Committee for the American Board of Pediatrics\, the Physician Director for the Board of Certification of the National Athletic Trainer Association and on the Medical Advisory Committee for the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. He is also a founder and director for Seattle Pediatric Sports Medicine.

SUMMARY:Cardiac Red Flags in Youth Sports
DESCRIPTION:This session is to advance education on the delivery of cardiovascular care in the young to promote safe physical activity and athletic participation. Through advanced heart screening\, improved emergency planning\, scientific research\, community outreach and education\, the goal is to prevent sudden cardiac death (SCD). \nJohnathan Drezner MD – is a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Director of the Center for Sports Cardiology at the University of Washington. He is board certified in Family Medicine and has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. He serves as a team physician for the University of Washington Huskies and the Seattle Seahawks\, and is past-President of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (2012-13). He has dedicated his academic career to investigating the epidemiology and prevention of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in young athletes and the development of effective models for primary and secondary prevention.

SUMMARY:Current Concepts in Concussion Rehabilitation
DESCRIPTION:This session will discuss the current concepts in concussion management following the Berlin consensus statement. The current challenges in identifying concussion. Concussion management from acute to post-concussion syndrome. Recognition of the neurocognitive aspects of musculoskeletal injury and concussion. \nPanelists: \nStanley A. Herring\, M.D.\, is Senior Medical Advisor and Co-Founder of the UW Medicine Sports Health & Safety Institute\, medical director of Sports\, Spine and Orthopedic Health for UW Medicine\, and co-medical director of the Sports Concussion Program\, a partnership between UW Medicine and Seattle Children’s. He is also a team physician for the Seattle Mariners and a consultant to the UW Sports Medicine Program. \nDavid B. Coppel\, Ph.D.\, is the director of Neuropsychological Services and Research for the Seattle Sports Concussion Program\, a joint effort of UW Medicine\, Harborview Medical Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital. His clinical interests include sports concussion; neuropsychological and neurocognitive evaluations; sport and performance psychological consultations; and cognitive-behavioral therapy. Dr. Coppel is a professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington\, Seattle. \nBecky Kerman PT\, NCS\,  is a physical therapist in the Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Program (CORP). She is a neurologic certified specialist and is a certified vestibular therapist. She runs the concussion program at HMC in collaboration with Seattle Children’s Hospital.
